Genius Hour Week 7
“Habit rules the unreflecting herd.” - William WordsworthThis week's quote had me stumped. I'm not going to kid you, I even searched for some articles to help understand this quote. I found this interesting read from the NY Times. It explains how we are creatures of habit and which the word "habit" can carry a negative connotation. Therefore, as creatures of habit sometimes we don't try new ideas because we are stuck in our ways. For the most part, I agree. I am a creature of habit and I don't deal with any type of change easily but a few years ago I read a book called Mindset by Carol Dweck. I've learned to let go of things I cannot control and to be more open minded and try keep a positive mindset about things.
Throughout this project, I've learned to embrace my success and my failures. Making a video and a narrated presentation were not fun nor relaxing ! I would consider those my failures. Do you know how many times I had to redo those things?! My success were all the craft items I made! I loved seeing the smiles on peoples faces when they saw my creations. Someone asked if I would be willing to do a wreath making class with teachers after school. I don't think I'm ready for that but I would like to do some kind of crafting class with students after school.
Here is one out of my 3 wreaths that I will be making this week. Both my sister and mom have birthday in early December so I decided to include a wreath with their gift. Then of course the third one will be for me. I didn't make a video or slide presentation. The steps are pretty much the same as my Thanksgiving wreath. The most important thing I learned is there isn't really a right or wrong way to make these wreaths. It's really about your creativity and style.

Alicia,
ReplyDeleteI like the quote and I think it is appropriate for the point you made at the end about there not being a right or wrong way to do something. In a time when we are bombarded with how to think, how to dress, what to eat, we tend to get lost in the world and do not look to our creative self. If it comes from you, it is creative and it is never wrong.
The Santa Claus wreath on the wall looks very well done. I would never thought that we can get this kind of art just with dollar store materials. Well done!
The best possible PD would be teachers teaching us something fun and outside the walls of education. I would love a make and take PD time. Hmmmm.... maybe Monika and you can whip something together? I have also read, Mindset by Carol Dweck and really do TRY to keep a positive mindset but oh there are days!
ReplyDeleteHoliday crafts are THE BEST! Your finished product is amazing! I'm sure your mom and sister are going to love it. You should consider selling on Etsy.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful craft creations! I also like that you brought up the book Mindset, I've read a lot about Growth Mindset too and feel it has changed the way I live as well. Your posts show your willingness to learn and grow, that was great to see. Best of luck crafting with the kiddos if you get around to it!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous! I love that you are making gifts. They are gifts from the heart. I want to learn how to make the ribbon bows like you made on your wreaths. I have all the materials, but cannot wrap my head around how to make the ribbons.
ReplyDeleteThanks Nicole! If you go on YouTube and search Southern Girl or Dollar Tree Christmas Wreaths you will find how to make the bows. They aren't very complicated. Give it a try!
DeleteOh my goodness! You need to sell these online! They are super cute! I give you credit for the patience it takes to complete projects. I feel that my creativity always opens up my willingness to begin projects, but my ADD easily derails me and I am onto a different unfinished project. Which by the time spring comes, I am throwing out 438,232 projects because I also hate clutter. I am my own worst enemy in projection creation haha. GREAT JOB. Tis the season and you did a BEAUTIFUL job :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you Sheila! Love your feedback!
