Genius Hour Week 2
Quote: We learn who we are–in practice, not in theory–by testing reality.
In some ways this is what I always tell my students and my own children. You never know what you can do until you try, In my classroom, I don't allow students or my own children to tell me they can't do something until they have tried. In a way, I feel this comes from my own passion to succeed. I myself don't like to be told I can't do something because no one knows what I'm capable of until I've tried. I'm not afraid of failure because if I gave my 100% to something and I don't succeed, I will usually try and try again! I believe failures lead to success.
With all that being said, many of you know that oldest son is in the Navy. When he was in boot camp, I wrote to him every day. It was a difficult time (actually still is) because for the first time in 22 years he wouldn't be home for the holidays. The holidays are a time for joy and if I couldn't have my full joy, I was going to bring others joy. I joined a Facebook Group called Cards from Home. This groups sends birthday cards, cards of encouragement, holiday cards, and basically any occasion cards to servicemen and women away from home. Hence the name, Cards from Home. At first I was buying cards, signing them, and sending them out. Now that I have committed to Genius Hour, I decided to make my own cards with a little love. I have also found a passion for washi tape! Weird, I know! So using stickers, washi tape, pens and markers I have created birthday cards. Here are a few that I just created over the weekend. I wish I would have videotaped myself doing this but instead here are some photographs.

That is so cool! I actually had to look up Washi tape. I picked up some over Christmas to use with making ornaments with my niece and never knew what it was called lol. I like that you are making encouragement cards, people need a little boost now and then. I look forward to seeing more of what you are able to create.
ReplyDeleteOoo I had never heard of washi tape before. It's so colorful- great for crafting. It's wonderful that your genius hour product is something that you can use to give a little holiday joy to others.
ReplyDeleteYay! Love the crafting! I have so much washi tape and scrapbooking materials but it's one of those things I don't have enough time for. Pinterest is full of ideas. Can't wait to see what you continue creating. Good luck! I love the idea of sending birthday cards. Who doesn't love getting something cute in the mail?!
