EEND 679Y Reflection

Wow! Another great course has come to an end. As I thnk back to all the coursework and discussion that were shared in class, I'm reminded of how fortunate I am to have shared it will all of you. I'm always amazed at how much I can learn from our group discussions.

The resources shared in this class were wonderful. I must be honest, there were some ideas that I wasn't sure if I agreed with or that I thought were things I could try in my own classroom. However, after reading the article, Turn Your Classroom into a Personalized Learning Environment, I thought, why not! The hardest thing for me to do with some of these ideas is to let go of the control in my room and handing it over to my students. So I decided to let loose a bit and give some of these ideas a try. I have to say that giving my students some personal learning time has been a joy. The are so into their research and creating a project, this is the most quiet time of the day in my class!

At the beginning of this course I started digital portfolios with my students, after reading a few articles from Modules 6, I learned that I was creating showcase portfolios rather than learning portfolios. Either way my students have been eager to add to their portfolio and I am more than willing to try again next year but I would make a point to have students visit and update their portfolios at least once every quarter.

I have enjoyed learning so much in this class and can't wait to continue to grow and learn along side with everyone else in our next class. In the meantime, let's make the most of this last month of school!

  1. I cannot agree with you more! I too learn so much from the group discussions. As well as sharing what is working and not working as we implement what we are learning in this course. I think it is so awesome that you are incorporating "showcase portfolios" with your students. The idea of the students choosing what to put in their portfolio gives them ownership and motivates them apply themselves. Kudos to you. It is my plan to have students create a portfolio to showcase their accomplishments next year.
I look forward to learning with you as we go on to the next course!

  2. Letting go the control of your classroom and moving into personalized learning can be scary. As you move towards it, you will see a that you will still put for the same effort, but the students' effort will increase too. It is worth it!
